- As the author of this program I felt it necessary to give you a little
- information about myself and my background to add a little personal touch.
- When you hear the name Bill Gates or Microsoft, you immediately draw a mental
- picture of the man or the corporation. But I know when you hear my company's
- name or my personal name, you don't have a clue. This file is just my way of
- saying "hello" to you.
-
- My name is Sherri Maciosek (pronounced Ma chew sik). My husband and I bought
- our first PC just five years ago. After a couple of months, I learned to use
- the machine to it's full potential. I also became aware of my interest in
- designing software.
-
- That next fall, I enrolled in a short computer programming course that taught
- me the basics of BASIC, Pascal, C, and COBOL. Upon completion of that course
- I found that I still couldn't do much more than before. I practiced designing
- programs for a couple of months, and then decided that it was time for me to
- get my degree.
-
- Because of personal and location limitations on me, I decided to get my degree
- via correspondence study. The hardest part at the time seemed to be finding
- a good reputable school that I could afford. Many of the schools that offer
- correspondence study are less than perfect when it comes to their curriculum.
- After what seemed an eternity, I found one. I enrolled and was amazed at how
- easily it is to learn something that at first, scared the daylights out of me.
-
- My course of study took me through BASIC, C, C++, COBOL, and Assembly. As
- part of the requirements I had to submit multiple programs (in each language)
- that I designed, coded, and debugged. C ended up to be the one I liked the
- most. And so I began to practice hard on my own to master the sometimes
- troublesome compiler syntax.
-
- After doing more than enough "nothing programs" (programs that really didn't
- do a whole lot), I decided that it was time to create a program that was far
- more useful. Then the big question was "what?". I continued creating those
- same type of "nothing programs" while I concentrated on my studies, and finally
- graduated with a certificate of excellence in December of last year.
-
- Meanwhile, my husband's career had advanced him to another position in another
- town, and our daughter was doing well in school. But employment for me in my
- field proved to be next thing to impossible in the extremely small community
- that we now live in. I decided that either I go back to "nothing jobs" or
- venture out on my own. After spending all that money on school, the choice
- was easy for me. I would have to try something on my own.
-
- Again, the question "what?". But our little first grader helped me answer my
- own question. I decided that even if I didn't make a dime working in my field,
- I would design a piece of software that would help my little girl in school.
- And so initial idea of Practicing Math was born.
-
- Many months have passed and I sincerely thank both my husband and our little
- girl for their patience and understanding while I sat at the computer every
- day and night (including most weekends). I feel forever indebted to them for
- their moral support and encouragement. They were the ones that kept me working
- even when I didn't have a paycheck to show something for my efforts.
-
- Practicing Math has undergone many revisions throughout the various stages of
- development. And having finally completed it, I feel confident that none of
- the revisions were in vain. It is what I envisioned it to be. Something
- easy enough for a preschooler to run, and yet not limited to that age level.
- There is no age limits on the program. Anyone who wants to practice up on
- their math skills can do so. From simple number matching to working with
- binary numbers, a little bit of almost everything is covered along the way.
- And most importantly, it doesn't require anything other than DOS to run.
-
- I fully realize there is no fancy bells and whistles to it. But most of us
- learned our mathematics with only 3 things; a pencil, a calculator (in high
- school and beyond), and a piece of paper. Isn't that all anyone really needs
- to do a math problem? I think so.
-
- Thank you for reading this file and showing an interest in my program. I hope
- it benefits you or your family in some way. And if you continue to use it
- beyond 30 days, please register it. That's the only way I can be sure that
- I've done my job well. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.
